The Friend in Need is the sixteenth episode of the eighth season of Bones.

Summary[]

The Jeffersonian team investigates the remains of a 15-year-old boy. Although his mother and a few close friends saw him as intelligent with poor social skills, the team discovers that this seemingly innocent boy was actually involved in illegal activity and had attended a high school party two weeks prior where drugs were present. The investigation takes an ugly turn when an underage girl confesses to being raped and the deceased boy's reputation is compromised. Meanwhile, with the case's spotlight on deception, intern Finn Abernathy contemplates telling Cam that her daughter Michelle is in town visiting for the weekend.

Plot[]

A homeless man finds a filthy suitcase and brings it to a pawnshop looking for a payday. When the owner refuses, the homeless opens the case to reveal very, very messy human remains. "50 cents?" bargains the homeless man. At the lab, the team examines the remains and quickly determines the victim is a teenage male. Booth (David Boreanaz) and Sweets (John Francis Daley) head to the home of the boy's mother to break the horrible news. The woman is comforted by her neighbor, Delores, and her neighbor's teenaged daughter, Kat. The boy was last seen at a party. Camille (Tamara Taylor) calls and informs Booth that Special K, aka ketamine, was in the victim's body.

Later, Finn (Luke Kleintank) meets Camille's daughter, Michelle (Tiffany Hines), after she returns from college. The two, who are dating, haven't seen each other in some time. Back at the apartment, Booth and Sweets look through the victim's room and find tons of electronics plus a huge wad of cash. What was this teenager up to? Angela (Michaela Conlin) then examines some of the electronics and finds cryptic text messages traced to Nick, a young man working for his father at a moving company. Booth interviews Nick, who denies the codes in the messages represented drug prices. Instead, he explains the victim was building smart phones. Nick was helping him to sell them to other young buyers.

Back at the Jeffersonian, Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Finn determine the victim had been asphyxiated. Angela then discovers the victim frequently visited a photo-sharing website filled with pictures from the infamous party. In every photo, the victim looks very angry -- and is clearly following Kat. In the last few photos, the victim is clearly furious at Kat and the older boy she is dancing closely with. Booth then interviews the older boy, who admits to having words with the jealous victim, but that's all. He denies hurting the boy ... or knowing his name.

Hours later, Kat comes to the Jeffersonian to talk with Sweets. "I was raped at that party," she cries. "I remember being at the party and then I woke up at home and ... I knew." All she remembers is one green eye. Her mother told her not to call the police because she didn't know who did it. Kat thinks she might have been drugged. Meanwhile, Bones discovers the Special K was not in the victim's liver -- meaning: he was carrying it, but didn't ingest it himself.

Finn then tells Camille that Michelle is in town. The girl came home early from college just to see her boyfriend. "You will meet with Michelle and you will tell me where," Camille says. "That way, you get to save your relationship, I get to yell at my daughter, and she gets to think it's all a coincidence." Deal. Booth and Bones then interview Delores, who admits she confronted the victim about raping Kat. "The blood drained from his face and he ran away," the mom explains. She is convinced the dead boy drugged and raped her daughter.

Kat then confronts Sweets, blaming him for bringing her mother into it. Sweets confesses he grew up in a bad foster home and was regularly beaten. "Until someone helped me see that it wasn't my fault," he explains through tears. "I'll do everything I can to catch the person who did this to you." Later that evening, Finn and Michelle are making out in line at a club when Camille appears out of nowhere. "Michelle!?" yells Camille, a very convincing actor. Michelle is shamed. Finn comforts the daughter of his boss.

Angela then reexamines the party photos and, this time, follows Kat. They find a young man giving Kat a drink. In the next shot, she is slumped over. The drink was drugged. So who is the young man giving her the drink? Later, Michelle apologizes to her mom. Camille lectures her daughter on not keeping secrets ... and then feels so guilty she admits Finn told her ahead of time. In a confessing mood, Camille then admits she is dating Arastoo. "I suppose you want me to keep that a secret from Finn?" Michelle says with a smile.

Angela, meanwhile, finds damage to the victim's bones are consistent with being trapped the suitcase by a series of heavy straps. Bones and Booth head back to Nick's moving company and find evidence of blood on his moving straps. He is arrested. In the interrogation room, Sweets notices Nick is wearing a necklace with a green eye attached. Turns out Nick drugged Kat and raped her. When the victim found out, Nick killed him and stuffed the remaining drugs in the suitcase with the body. Case closed.

Sweets then shares the news with Kat and Delores. "He gave you a spiked drink at the party," Sweets says. "He has a necklace with a green-eyed pendant." Kat breaks down in tears. Sweets urges the girl's mother to help her get though this very difficult time.

Quotes[]

Saroyan: I have a daughter. I'd rather not think of her doing what I did.
Angela: Cam was naughty!

"If she finds out, you're a dead man! Not a good thing to say here, I know."
―Saroyan

Saroyan: Here's what gonna do: you will meet with Michelle and tell me where. I will happen upon you. That way you will get to save your relationship, I get to be angry at my daughter and she gets to think it was a coincidence and everyone's happy. Understood?
Finn Abernathy: Uh, yes ma'am. And this isn't lying?
Saroyan: Oh, Finn. You have so much to learn. Why don't you just concentrate on the murder for now?
Abernathy: Yes, ma'am, I'd like that very much.

Brennan: You are very stupid. You just confessed to rape and murder.
Nick: Y-You just said you couldn't charge me with both! You lied.
Booth: I didn't lie.
Brennan: No, he can only charge you with murder. The rape is a whole other jurisdiction.
Booth: D.C. cops will charge you with that.
Brennan: Sucker.
Booth: Stupid.
