The Man in the Mud is the tenth episode of the third season of Bones.

Summary[]

A pair of lovers stumble across a male skeleton in a muddy hot spring in the middle of a National Park. The investigation leads to famous Motorcycling family and multimillion dollar company. Meanwhile, Booth and Brennan are challenged by Dr. Sweets to spend an evening double dating with him and his girlfriend, doing an activity that means they won't just talk about work.

A young teen couple illegally go into a mud bath located in a wood; to their horror, they find a skeleton. The team figures out the body is that of Tripp Goddard, a motorcycle racer, which explains all of the bodies previous damage.

During the investigation Booth and Bones investigate the killer at the race track and learn that Tripp out one of the racers in a wheelchair. He explains that Tripp was a dirty racer and recently wrecked a racer named Danny. Danny and Tripp fought after the race was over. 

Jack and Zack are back in the lab trying to figure out what the murder weapon could be and decide that the metal scrapings came from a custom made motorcycle part. Jack forces Zack to pick just 1 weapon after Zack constantly drops the other weapons noisily in the lab, resulting in them agreeing to both be the King of the lab. Booth and Bones interview Danny with his lawyer, Mr. Smalls. Danny claims Tripp had a better motorcycle, and then his lawyer tells him to tell everything. Danny explains that a couple years ago Tripp was dating Danny's twin sister and Tripp cheated on her. Danny beat him up a lot. Danny then asks Bones out. Booth says no, and Bones tells Booth she can answer for herself. Back in the lab Zack and Jack are trying to explain to Cam why they are king of the lab and Cam tells them they have nothing and are not king of the lab and to get back to work. 

Booth and Bones are still at the motorcycle body shop and find a case of cleaners next to a drain. Jack tells them the solvent would suspend the blood and DNA. Using a black light they see blood near a drain. In Sweet's office Booth is mad that Sweet's isn't talking. Dr. Sweets catches Bones in a lie trying to protect Booth. Booth doesn't want to go to ceramics class because he wants to do something he is good at. 

At the race track Danny is given a Tripp's bike to ride. During the ride Danny doesn't decelerate and crashes the motorcycle and it blows up, killing Danny. The FBI team shows that the motorcycle was tampered with and purposely used to kill Danny. 

At the ceramics class Booth and Bones are making bowls while meeting Sweet's girlfriend April. She tells Bones you can see fish's souls through their eyes. Dr. Sweet's gets in trouble with his girlfriend and they have a fight because she believes all animals are connected. April admits that Sweets plays first person shooter video games at night and then Booth and Bones get into a fun pottery throwing fight after Booth crafts a horse. Dr. Sweet's girlfriend throws wet clay at Sweet's face as she is still mad at him. 

Tripp's truck is found somewhere in the woods and a pry bar with blood is located in the truck. The scene shows he was struck in the head from behind in the mechanics bay, his forehead hits the side mirror and fractures his head. and then shoved in the back of the truck storage and driven to the woods. They find hair that appears to match Lenny, the race owner and Danny's father. Lenny said he didn't kill Tripp and he had just signed 10% of his business over to Tripp to sign exclusively to race for Slam Bolt. Booth wants to know how the murderer knew about the secret mud hole and calls the kid in who found the body to tell him who told him about the mud hole. He says Garth, the racer in the wheel chair told him about it.  Back in the lab Angela shows that the murder weapon used a choke up to hit Tripp with the crowbar. Bones says like a girl. 

April comes to see Bones to see what she thinks of her and Lance (Dr. Sweets). April explains that Sweet's is too young for her, 23 to her 27 years. She asks Bones if her and Sweet's are compatible, then discuss their sex life. At the same time Cam tells Bones the DNA shows Tripp's killer was a female. During the interrogations with Danny's twin sister, Phillipia, she admits that she killed Tripp with the prybar. She said she loved her brother and everyone knows you don't ride someone else's bike. 

The episode ends with Dr. Sweet's dropping by the Lab saying April broke up with him. Lance said he knew it was coming and was prepared for it. Booth invites Lance to go bowling with him and Bones. Lance says he doesn't like fish and is more of a dog person.

  • This episode reveals that Angela played softball--when discussing the murder weapon, she spoke about how she used to "choke up" whenever she batted.
