The Mother and Child in the Bay is the second episode of the second season of Bones.

Summary[]

Booth and Brennan examine the remains of a woman and fetus found in the Delaware Bay. The body is a pregnant newlywed whose mysterious disappearance one year ago had been a major national news story. Her husband is the prime suspect in the case, but he disappears before Brennan and Booth question him, prompting Booth to call for a manhunt. Meanwhile, Booth is upset that his ex-girlfriend is letting their son spend time with her new boyfriend.

Plot[]

In Delaware bay, the decomposed corpse is found of Carlie Richardson, who had been missing for a year, her husband Kyle was released from custody because there was no evidence/body to convict him at that time. She was brutally beaten up and pregnant, but finding a fresh water fish proves that the body was moved.

Booth meanwhile worries if his ex Rebecca Stinson's new boyfriend, Drew, is a good influence on their 4 year-old son Parker.

Bones still mistrusts her new department chief Dr. Camille Saroyan. Kyle Richardson has fled, hitting his present girlfriend Karen Tyler, according to her to save her the risks of coming with him, she is soon caught on several lies.

The evidence proves Kyle couldn't have done it; the corpse drifted naturally all the way from a creek in New Jersey. The evidence holds more surprises, such as a second baby.

Notes[]

  • This case is based on the case of Scott and Laci Peterson. Scott Peterson was convicted of killing his pregnant wife, Laci and their unborn son on Christmas Eve, 2002. The underlying theory is that he killed his wife so that he could pursue a life with his mistress, Amber Frey.
  • The case is also based on the crime of fetal abduction, also known as "cesarean kidnappings", which involves forcibly cutting open a pregnant woman's womb and stealing their fetus, usually committed by other women for the sake of possessing the baby. The kidnapping of the son specifically appears to be based on the Delimar Vera kidnapping, where a cousin set fire to her mother's home and snatched the infant daughter to raise as her own, until she was caught and arrested with Delimar being returned to her mother.
  • Shaken baby syndrome is a prevalent physical abuse of infants and small children. It happens when a child with little support of their head from their still-developing spine is violently shaken, causing brain trauma from the bones and organs of their head thrashing around that can disable or kill them. The assaults and murders are commonly associated with exasperated parents and guardians and aggressive abusers with despise directed at the children.
  • In the beginning of the episode, Booth calls his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend Stu, when his real name was Drew.
  • When Booth and Rebecca argue over her new boyfriend, she says she's not legally required to let Booth see Parker because they were never married. In D.C., though, custody disputes involving never-married parents are treated with reference to the same statutory factors as divorced parents. Thus, unless a court finds some detrimental effect on the child, each parent has visitation rights regardless of whether they were once married. However, if Rebecca did not name a father on the birth certificate in addition to not being married and absent a subsequent court order naming him as the father, Booth would, indeed, have no legal rights to the child.
